Rise in asian superiority and dominance in soccer
Having cable tv at home and a 8-5 job.. I was following this year's Asian cup 2007 closely and there r just so many thoughts swimming in my head. Firstly.. I must stress the fact that Asian teams are growing..both physically and mentally stronger.. Being an Asian and being a regular footballer.. I do have the same mentality as most Asian footballers will possess: that we Asians are always second to the rest of the world..be it Eurasians or Africans.. One must also admit that Asian soccer has never been in the limelight, or given its chance to prove its worth..as shown from how few Asian teams can secure a place in the World cup.. Until the Asian federation complained and South Korea's fairytale run to the semis in the 2002 WC which really shook the whole world upside down and people starts to take notice of the giant steps that Asian teams have taken to prove themselves at the world stage..
Back to the 2007 Asian cup.. I was rather appalled by the comments of Australian and Torino's midfielder Vince Grella, which appeared in the newspaper today.. Apparently..Vince and the entire Australian team were bitter about the crashing out of the Asian cup..having being beaten by eventual champions Iraq 3-1.. Vince lashed out at gamesmanship by opponents and the standard of refereeing at the Asian cup..calling it disgraceful.. Firstly.. lets make something really clear.. there r always ups and downs in soccer..sometimes u lose not because u played worse..but because things are not going your way..and that includes the referee DECISIONS. No one likes tasting defeat..but surely before the Australians accuse the Asians should they think of their own behavior.. I was an Australian fan.. Because I like the way they battle through the World cup with such valiance and bravery to eventually be knocked out by a cruel last minute disputed penalty in favour of the Italians.. I respected and admire the way they took that defeat..because that is probably one of the hardest defeat one can ever take.. But all that image that has been created in me just change in a flash.. over what happened in the Asian cup.. If the opposition was Italy and not Iraq, I doubt that the Australians will post such comments bout it.. I'm not trying to make a big fuss here but I just demand that Asians should be respected just like any other continents.. Because of the very fact that the once impression of Asians being second to the Europeans are now as good as extincted..
